Meet The Real Royal Family
Meet The Real Royal Family |December 26, 2023
Head Coach Joe Mazzulla of the Boston Celtics made news at a postgame press conference following his team's victory over the Miami Heat in 2022.
One reporter asked if the first-year coach noticed Prince William and Princess Kate Middleton of Wales were sitting courtside at the game. The reporter asked, "Did you get a chance to meet with the royal family, and if not, what was it like having them there in the building?" Coach Mazzulla answered with a question, "Jesus, Mary, and Joseph?" The reporter laughs and responds, "The prince and princess of Wales." Mazzulla said, "I'm only familiar with one royal family. I don't know too much about that one. But hopefully, they're Celtics fans."
Coach Mazzulla not only knows his way around the basketball court but the Bible as well. See, the narrative of Christmas is about a family that comes from a royal lineage. The first seventeen verses in the Gospel of Matthew provide a detailed ancestry report concerning Jesus. This genealogical record is evidence that Jesus, in His humanity, was a direct descendant of Abraham and David through Joseph, his legal father.
This fact of Christmas serves two significant purposes. First, for Jesus to be the Messiah, He had to have a legal connection to King David of the Old Testament. Historically, if that "genealogy box" can not be checked, Jesus is not the Messiah. However, Jesus is indeed connected to David through Joseph, meaning that He fulfills the prophecy of Second Samuel 7:12-16 which foretells the coming reign of the Messiah. Secondly, the genealogy of Jesus, particularly from Joseph's side, makes Jesus, Mary, and Joseph genuine royalty because of their ties to King David. Matthew 1:1 opens with, "The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham."
The certainty of the royalty of Jesus was what Paul led with when writing the most doctrine-filled book of the Bible. Romans 1:1-4 says, "Dear friends in Rome: This letter is from Paul, Jesus Christ's slave, chosen to be a missionary, and sent out to preach God's Good News. 2 This Good News was promised long ago by God's prophets in the Old Testament. 3 It is the Good News about his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who came as a human baby, born into King David's royal family line; 4 and by being raised from the dead he was proved to be the mighty Son of God, with the holy nature of God himself."
To God be the glory for the royalty and majesty of His Son!
