Taste God's Goodness

Taste God's Goodness | July 14th
According to the National Library of Medicine, taste has traditionally centered around five basic taste qualities: sweet, salty, sour, bitter, umami, or savory. The NLOM also notes that advances from the Human Genome Project and other contributors have identified and determined that many genes and molecular mechanisms are involved in the biology of taste. More commonly known to us is the actual tasting process of the approximately 10,000 tastebuds, which are super-sensitive microscopic hairs called microvilli. These tiny hairs send messages to the brain about how something tastes, and we respond accordingly.
When we contemplate the tongue and taste, we are once again humbled by the awe-inspiring nature of God's creative powers. It's no surprise that Scripture uses the tongue to symbolize our need to taste God's goodness.
Psalm 34:8, "Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in him."
The goodness of God is a central theme woven throughout the Scriptures. As inspiring and satisfying as the truth of God's goodness is, He doesn't force our trust or dependence on Him. Instead, God provides instructions and invitations like David wrote about in Psalm 34:8 because He experienced God's goodness in both seasons of prosperity and pain. Thus, God has recorded this taste test invitation in the Bible for people of every generation to read and respond to accordingly. Just as your taste of something savory or sweet sends you into a state of satisfaction, so will the goodness of God and the refuge He alone provides, offering a comforting and secure place for us.
In Psalm 31:19, David also said, "Oh, how great is your goodness to those who publicly declare that you will rescue them. For you have stored up great blessings for those who trust and reverence you."
Knowing this, take time to taste God's goodness by reading the Scriptures daily, praying, and attending church.
Remember Jesus's promise that John, the eyewitness, recorded: "Then Jesus declared, 'I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry...' " (John 6:35).
