Encouragement Is Necessary

Encouragement Is Necessary | June 17th

In the 21st century, it's widely agreed that basic needs include clean air, food, safe drinking water, healthcare, shelter, education, and access to information. However, one crucial necessity that is often overlooked is encouragement. Just like oxygen, hydration, and opportunities for personal development, encouragement is vital for survival and thriving. When it comes to encouraging others, the Bible doesn't just recommend or suggest it; instead, God commands this essential action and attitude repeatedly.
First Thessalonians 5:11 says, "Therefore, encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing."
Scripture indicates that you can uplift others by meeting their needs, speaking a kind word, checking in on them, praying for them, and sharing God's promises. Most of Apostle Paul's letters to the churches served these same purposes. For instance, take the book of Philippians. Paul had helped establish this church ten years before writing his letter to them while he was under Roman incarceration. He desired to encourage the church regarding their partnership in spreading the Gospel, the unity within the church, standing firm in their faith despite hardships, and to commend them for their timely assistance.
Paul begins the letter of encouragement by saying: "Paul and Timothy, servants of Christ Jesus, To all God's holy people in Christ Jesus at Philippi, together with the overseers and deacons 2 Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ" (Philippians 1:1-2).

Even in his greetings, Paul encouraged others. Notice that he tells the Philippian believers that he and his apprentice, Timothy, are their servants. Next, he reminds them that they all belong to Jesus and finishes his opening by prayerfully asking for the grace and peace of the Father and Son to be extended to them, which was much needed given their current state of affairs. See, the church at Phillipi was enduring persecution, poverty, and the pains of being occupied by the Romans, which included heavy taxation. If matters weren't bad enough, history shows that this region experienced a famine at the same time, which impacted the church. Nevertheless, they still maintained their faithfulness to God, and Paul wanted to highlight that by encouraging them in this letter.
Like the Philippian church, you will inevitably face difficulties even when doing the right thing. Encouragement will help you stay the course and remain steadfast in your faith. Understanding this, be prepared to accept encouragement and offer it in return.
